Gary Poppins Popcorn Review

First, I love everything about the name Gary Poppins! It’s a genius play on words, marrying the fact that popcorn is popped with the nostalgia of Mary Poppins. The only thing that would make it better is if Gary Poppins was a real person. (I’m just assuming he’s not and holding out hope that I can issue a correction if I find out differently!)

But the name alone will only get you so far. Luckily, I got to taste one of the classics for this Gary Poppins Popcorn review.

A big, yellow box arrived at my door full of pantry-sized bags of the Creamery Butter flavored popcorn. While I wanted to save it for a movie night, the temptation of handcrafted, gourmet popcorn waiting for me was too much. My kids and I decided to make it an afternoon snack.

I’m happy to report that it was a success! Because Gary Poppins packages the popcorn as soon as it cools, it tasted freshly popped. The white kernels were fluffy with an appropriate amount of crunch. The dairy-fresh butter must have been drizzled in such a way that it was evenly distributed. And you still got that occasional taste of buttery goodness reminiscent of the top of a movie-theater tub of popcorn (remember back in 2019 when we could go to the movies?), but without the filmy aftertaste that makes you feel like your arteries are clogging on the spot. A light hint of sea salt pulled it all together. Plus, my fingers weren’t left with a greasy residue.

Best of all, my kids liked it, too! I realize that a flavor with the word “butter” in it can’t exactly be described as healthy. However, popcorn is a whole grain, so it’s closer than a lot of other food choices. (Gary Poppins does have a couple of Lite Delights options if you are interested in those.) And since it is pre-popped popcorn, you don’t have to deal with all the extra kernels sneaking into a bite.

Though I got a classic flavor for my Gary Poppins Popcorn review, there are lots of unique popcorn flavors available. Go for something more traditional with the gourmet kettle corn, cheddar, or caramel. Or tackle a more adventurous savory flavor like ranch, sriracha, or salt and vinegar. There are also sweet popcorn mix-ins like dark chocolate caramel, white chocolate peppermint, coffee and caramel, and pumpkin spice kettle. I’m considering the white cheddar jalapeño hoping a little spice will prevent my kids from eating it all!
